Add new website IIS 7

this worked for me

Edit the hosts file

Just if case you don’t know, the Hosts file is where you can manually enter a hostname and an IP address pair, thereby bypassing the DNS server. This can be pretty useful in certain situation, especially for anyone in IT.

The path to the Hosts file in Windows 7 is the same as usual:

\system32\drivers\etc\

Where is usually c:\windows unless you installed Windows on a different partition. By default, you cannot see these hidden folders since they are system folders.

rename using appcmd

using appcmd

%systemroot%\system32\inetsrv\appcmd set app “website name/OLDNAME” -path:/NEWNAME

%systemroot%\system32\inetsrv\appcmd set vdir “website name/OLDNAME” -path:/NEWNAME

literally = -path colon slash no quotes, no website name

this worked for me, once I read the comments, and figured out the quirky syntax.
THE appcmd ERROR MESSAGES WERE OF NO HELP WHATSOEVER

If you are using the Default Web Site that’s what you use as the website name
