Those things were unknown in my neck of the South Dakota woods -- chili dogs they were called, and they were just regular hot dogs, with chili on them.

 

Now, in the Scranton area, the stumpy-bunned cut-in-half hot-dog-sandwiches-with-special-sauce are known as “Texas Weiners”, and the best provender is the Coney Island Texas Lunch. The recipe supposedly came from their father who had a stand at Coney Island in the 30s. Who knows....
