What should it be -- dated, or [[http://semver.org/|semantic]] (major, minor, patch) ?

Dated can give the idea that a project is no longer relevant if there has been no release in a while.
OTOH, Dated gives you a ready idea when it came out relative to when your problem occurred (eg, we started having problems in July, but the new release didn't come out until August, so it can't be that).

Semantic gives developers and maintainers a lot of information.
But it's not ''really'' semantic -- it conveys no information about changes.
supposedly it conveys info about big or small changes.
But that is relative, and redefined by each team.
