Framing devices pose a context.
Particularly important for experimental works.
I had a music teacher in college who said you could write 12-tone (or 20th-century avant-garde) church music, as long as you gave the congregation something they could sing.
More than just a story bookend, it can be the look and presentation -- a string of random numbers presented as book. Gibberish, with punctuation, as a dialogue? Like that.

The construct of narrative
Why Rational People Buy Into Conspiracy Theories -- Maggie Koreth Baker
But according to recent scientific research on the matter, [our improved access to information] most likely only serves to make theories more convincing to the public. What’s even more surprising is that this sort of theorizing isn’t limited to those on the margins. Perfectly sane minds possess an incredible capacity for developing narratives, and even some of the wildest conspiracy theories can be grounded in rational thinking, which makes them that much more pernicious.

Marx Brothers films
Perhaps most notably, A Night at the Opera established a formula that would be used for every subsequent film the Marx Brothers made at MGM:
opening scene with Groucho
a friendship created between the romantic hero and Chico
Chico and Groucho going through several verbal routines
Harpo joining as Chico’s partner
lush surroundings as a backdrop to the Brothers’ lunacy
a fall from grace
a rebound on a grand scale in which everything is righted
Quora: What are narrative fractals?
There should really be a page devoted to this subject (there are entire wikis, elsewhere!).
